Is India Still Safer For Women??!

Greetings Visitor,

I wrote the below article by myself for my college's semester presentation. I would like to share this article with you and would welcome your comments and point of view.

And it goes something like this...

Let us start off with a great proverb in Tamil language: “Pengal nam naattin kangal” which means that women are the eyes of our nation. But the recent atrocities don’t prove of the proverb much. While I was searching for little information on this topic, I had just typed “Violences against” in the Google search menu when in the second option itself it showed the option “Violences against women in India”. So, we can imagine on the frequencies and magnitudes of the atrocities taking place against women in India.

In a newspaper I read an article on girls being kidnapped from the eastern parts of Maharastra and sold for money, And sometimes even in exchange of a Buffalo to the men in the regions of Madhya Pradesh. The reason was found out to be the female foeticides that has been practised often along those regions that had lead to the decreasing number of girls and the sex ratio. Not even a fraction of kidnapped girls inform to police because they think that they weren’t cheated but married, so no need to inform Police or else their domestic life will get spoiled. Should we justify the men’s action? No.

Even few days back, there was news on the molestation of a 3yr old girl child in Kerala by a teen male. Why would such a crime happen in India’s leading state in education? Of course we can’t question their intellectual mind, for they themselves know that what he had done cannot be forgiven.
And as many of you know about the Delhi gang rape case and acid attacks etc that had been happening one after other in various states of India and the political parties blaming the ruling government for the lack of security.

Even after so many protests, the crimes hasn't stopped. There were more news on the raping of children in the age of 6 and 7 yrs etc...
So there goes the question: How can these things happen continuously?
Can a political party be blamed for an individual’s mistake? Never.
Why is the rate of crime against women is very huge in Delhi? Is it becoming the rape capital of India?
Believe it or not: To tell the fact mind is the culprit.

Some point of the ministers were that the females aren't wearing proper cloth and they tend to seduce the men. But what is the complaint with the children ? They weren't wearing proper cloth ? They gave wrong signs ? As we can see that their points are "Humbugh!!".

India is famous for its national heritage and mainly its traditional systems. Our histories are known for its respect for women and women’s bravery.
Our ancestors were living in a completely closed environment where their thinking towards women was of respectful nature, that is, until the modernisation took over and ruined the system of living. The practices of modernisation had been the gateway for many unimaginable and hateful activities which depict women as a toy that men can handle in whatever ways they want to. Allow me to highlight a point here: Women are like glasses; they need to be protected and handled with proper love and care. So, are we providing them with the protection they deserve?

And the more interesting truth is that even our Indian cinemas are playing a major part in this scenario. They depict scenes likes hero following the heroine, despite of her refusal in their movies and finally winning their heart in the climax which affects the mind of people in their early teenage. These very images create havoc in the mind of males that it leads to the increasing number of acid attacks due to one side love failure and even in our very own state Tamil Nadu, notably the unfortunate cases of Vinodhini and Vidya.

Obviously, when a new thing is shown to an individual, he/she is more prone to adapt to it until their common senses work out. This image had changed the mind sets of people in India and many other countries.

The scenery of Indian jails are viewed as funny and luxurious place. When someone goes in, there’s always another one to bail him out which increased the rate of crime, particularly in India. But this is not the case in United Arab Emirates where when someone harasses a woman he is hanged or shot to death; this law had made the country to stay clean of any violence.

Some of our Indian laws tend to be very weak even though several amendments had taken place especially in violence against women. To mention one, in the case of Aruna Shanbaug victim of an acid attack in the earlier 2000s, the accusers were given 9 years imprisonment but when they appealed in High court they were given bail. Even in case of Delhi rape case, the government promised of commissioning fast track courts for getting quick response against the violences, but those fast track courts were acting slow that their purpose went useless. The justice of Indian laws never amounted to prove much even in its existences and is utter waste.

The more significant cases in India are:
2012 Guwahati molestation of a teenage girl by 30 men.
Ruchika Girhotra; suicide, where the case hasn’t been settled properly and the accused is not being punished what he is ought to.
Aruna shanbag; injured in acid attack when she was just 18.
Sonali Mukherjee; injured in acid attack when she was only 23.
2012 Delhi gang rape case; the victim died and she was 23 only.

It was earlier believed that the world will end in the month of December in 2012. But these cases make us realise that it is not the end of human race actually but the humanity itself.
Even now the moment I speak on this topic there maybe some harassing happening to a girl, somewhere in India, the rates had increased alarmingly: I can accept the truth that India is not safer for women.

According to Thomas Reuters Foundation survey, it says that India is the 4th most dangerous place for women to live in. Even the foreign tourists are harassed in India.

Parents are really afraid of sending their siblings in public as there are no assurances that they will return back safely. This will lead to decrease in their courage and bravery to face the world and, eventually stunt the growth and achievements by them in various fields.

In a place where humans are trying to embed the artificial intelligence skills into robots and turning them into Humanoids, the common man is lacking his own common sense and intellectual stuffs and becoming a beast.

It is not about the way they are dressed or they behave but it is our mind that is so complicated that it causes this much trouble.
As a conclusion there is only one thing we can do to improve the condition of women in India and that is by “redefining our mind and start looking women as respectful and honorable souls”.

let us unite together to give a better place for women to live in India with dignity and pride.
Jai hind !!
